The main physiology points of a character are the sex, age, height, weight, posture, appearance, defects, and heredity. What the character’s mannerisms, movements, and dialogue are reveals aspects of the individual’s personality and background and what actions will occur regarding the handling of the movie’s conflict. These examples will provide a good analysis of a character. Let’s draw upon the characters from Detour, Cyrano de Bergerac, and the hypothetical example, Wanderlust : The Beauty of Discovery, to see how character is or could be expressed. For instance, the dialogue cannot be a ranting and raving of a particular situation while the character is standing calmly, looking out a window. In addition, the dialogue in these situations has to agree with the physical movements. Every shot or frame of a film has to count in order to accomplish the action and progress the story. The physical actions and the dialogue of the character change from the exposition and conflict as he or she goes through the rising and falling action of the movie.

Physiology is included in this portrayal because many movie characters are self-conscious of their physical appearances, like Cyrano de Bergerac who was self-conscious of his nose. Since a movie is a visual experience, the sociology and psychology, along with the physiology, are subtly portrayed visually by the physical movements and the dialogue the character displays in any particular situation.

In order to create a three-dimensional character with a well-developed background, the movie has to illustrate the character’s sociology, psychology, and physiology. In order for the movie to express this development, the character has to show growth in moral and ethical qualities, such as integrity, honesty, or courage, and by having a well-developed background, making the character three-dimensional. The viewer wants to see the main character (protagonist) and the supporting characters develop like people do in real life. Identifying with the characters is a common reason people love a certain movie. This leads us to the main ingredient of a movie and why we watch movies: the characters. The portrayal of a character in a movie can also be phrased by the formula: Dialogue + Physical Movement = Character. I know that’s not at all what you’re going for, but i thought it might help spur some creative defines character as “the aggregate of features and traits that form the individual nature of some person or thing, including moral or ethical quality, reputation, and the qualities of honesty, courage, or the like integrity.” 30

as the series progresses, we’d be looking out for these on the first watch through. If you were to watch the episode again, you would see 47 in disguise or in the background setting up the hit. in a classic ‘whodunnit’-style denouement (with flashbacks) we are shown how 47 pulled it off and escaped.

we’d also get to see the fallout of each hit.Īfterwards a cop, one of the few who kind of knows who 47 is and has been hunting him, turns up. Then, right at a point you aren’t expecting, the hit happens and the target is dead. the thing is, the target is always in a position that’d be difficult for them to get whacked, so we’re always thinking “how’s 47 going to do it?” you could have all sorts of genres for the story (barring the really obviously unrealistic ones). We see their lives, the people in it, why they deserve or don’t deserve to be whacked etc. Treat it like a reverse columbo a ‘howhedunnit’ rather than a ‘whodunnit’.Ĥ7 recieves his target at the beginning, but the rest of the episode follows a story involving the target rather than 47. (i’m not hijacking your thread, just popping an idea down.

who wants to see a hitman film with hardly any hitman? a tv series though, might work… The real characters in the game are the people he whacks, but i don’t know if that would translate all that well into a movie. he gives a little push here, a snapped chandelier there, then walks out without anyone even looking at him. In blood money, i always saw him as a lynchian idea of death. equally, a movie where the main character isn’t somehow changed by the events is generally unsatisfactory. the minute you do that, you undermine the mystery. he shouldn’t really have a character arc or a personality because that isn’t what’s satisfying about him.

whenever anyone treats him as a character, rather than a force of nature, they dilute him. Problem is (for me), 47 isn’t really a character, he’s a cipher.
